Corruption and scandals

  • Bioproducts contract halted after an OLAF probe. Bivol reports that payments under the Отиди, вземи, хапни биологично project of the Bulgarian Association Bioproducts (EUR 4,574,551) were stopped after an OLAF investigation: documents and data on inflated prices and fictitious deliveries to subcontractors were found in Brussels. The project is carried out by the Brussels firm Agropromotion SARL, which OLAF investigated. Named as Albena Simeonova, she told the outlet that Porozhanov's orders were being appealed in court and suggested the probe stemmed from a denunciation by Greek producers envious of Bulgarian competition. Fakti, reprinting a piece by 19min.bg, writes that the contract, signed on 17.09.2015 by the association she heads, was stopped by an order of 28.04.2017; that she brought a case and lost it before the Sofia City Administrative Court (26.03.2018) and the Supreme Administrative Court (17.06.2019); and that according to a State Fund Agriculture document of 12.06.2018 OLAF flagged "fraudulent activity" (our translation) and unlawful payments of EU funds. The piece carries no statement from her. — Bivol, 25.04.2017, Fakti (from 19min.bg), 07.10.2021
  • Her name drawn into the case of the Briton wanted by Interpol. According to initial unconfirmed information, News.bg writes, the farm in the village of Lyubenovo where the 28-year-old British citizen David Bodil was arrested was hers. She rejects this: his house is at the other end of the village. She confirms, however, that she knew the detainee's grandfather and helped him pay his bills in the first days of the new year at the mayor's request, as it had to be someone who speaks English. In parliament she declined to answer media questions and said only: "I do not feel guilty" (our translation). Wikipedia states that "after an investigation by DANS and the Interior Ministry it was established that the MP is not involved" (our translation). — News.bg, 11.01.2023, Wikipedia
