Corruption and scandals

  • Arrested as a police officer while receiving marked banknotes. Skandal.bg, citing a 2008 BTA report and the Sofia Military District Prosecutor's Office, writes that as an officer of the Third District Police Station in Sofia he was arrested on 7 March at the moment he was receiving 1,000 marked leva to drop the investigation of a case file against a mother and son who owned a Sofia car repair shop. According to the prosecutors this was the first instalment of 2,000 leva he had demanded; the people being extorted had reported him on 5 March. On 10 March the Sofia Military District Court imposed the permanent measure of detention on remand. Bivol stated on Facebook that he was dismissed the same year for corruption, and Petel relayed this when he was elected an MP for Vazrazhdane. Neither outlet reports the outcome of the case. — Skandal.bg, 06.10.2022, Petel.bg, 06.10.2022
  • Expelled from the Vazrazhdane parliamentary group on 9.02.2024. The newspaper 24 Chasa reports that he was expelled, together with Ivo Ruschev and Nikolay Drenchev, after a scandal in the Sofia Municipal Council in which four of the party's councillors backed the PP-DB-SS candidate for chair of the council. According to the paper the reason is that the three MPs had proposed those four councillors for the party's lists in the local elections. — 24 Chasa, 09.02.2024
  • Asked to leave the party България може, with grounds for expulsion. Co-chair Kuzman Iliev and six other members of the leadership of България може demand, in an address published by BTA, that Arangelov, then the party's deputy chair, and five others leave within 24 hours, failing which they will put their expulsion to a vote. They give as grounds that the group opposed rules of conduct for party members holding public office and explicitly asked for an exemption for the Sofia Municipal Council councillors. The party later published grounds for expulsion under art. 14(5)(b) and (c) of its statute: he missed 13 of 29 Executive Council meetings (45%), and as the person responsible for election activity he made no real contribution to the party's participation in the partial mayoral elections. Both texts are the position of one side in an internal party dispute. — BTA (press release of България може), 24.01.2026, BTA (press release of България може), 28.01.2026
