Corruption and scandals
- The expulsion. In June 2017 DPS expelled the mayor of Hitrino, Nuridin Ismail. DPS MP Yordan Tsonev claimed: "The main reason is that there are too many signals from the citizens of Hitrino that the reconstruction of Hitrino is not going according to their expectations. There is no transparency in the activity of the mayor and of the municipal organisation" (our translation). Ismail called the claims of unaccountability "nonsense" (our translation) and said he had withdrawn from all party posts. The accusations come from DPS, the party that expelled him. — Mediapool, 14.06.2017
- Preference votes. In November 2024 Club Z reported that Aylin Pehlivanova, fourth on the PP-DB list in Shumen, collected nearly 2,400 preference votes, "mostly from villages in Hitrino municipality" (our translation). The mayor of Hitrino, Nuridin Ismail, her father according to Club Z, told bTV: "I am not saying that my being mayor has not had an influence" (our translation), and added that he had never needed bought votes. — Club Z, 07.11.2024
- Controlled voting. In 2021 RFE/RL wrote that non-governmental organisations point to Hitrino municipality as one of the places with a significant number of polling sections at risk of controlled voting, and that the results show most voters vote according to the political preferences of the mayor, Nuridin Ismail. According to a study by the Anti-Corruption Fund cited there, between 38 and 52 per cent of the sections in the municipality are at risk of controlled voting. The article does not mention Aylin Pehlivanova. — RFE/RL, 16.11.2021
