Communist Party and State Security

  • Investigator before 1989. According to his Wikipedia biography, in 1980–1981 he was a trainee judge at the Sofia City Court, and from 1981 to 1992 an investigator at the district investigation service in Sofia. From 1992 he was deputy director and from 1995 to 2001 director of the National Investigation Service. In 2001–2005 he was a BSP MP, in 2008–2009 deputy minister of justice, and in 2021–2022 minister of the interior. — Wikipedia (Bulgarian)
  • The interrogation of Evgeniy Mihaylov, 1990. The film director Evgeniy Mihaylov, who on 14 December 1989 filmed Petar Mladenov's remark "It is best for the tanks to come", told Trud in July 2021 that after the recording was broadcast in June 1990 he was interrogated by Rashkov, "then a young investigator", for about 20 hours in all. According to Mihaylov, Rashkov gave him a record of the interrogation written in shorthand to sign and told him: "You will not leave here unless you sign"; the typed record, he says, was untrue: "They wanted to prove that I had not filmed it" (our translation). Mihaylov was in the UDF election studio and in the same interview criticises Rashkov as a politician. — Trud, 08.07.2021

Corruption and scandals

  • The arrest of Borisov, 2022. On the evening of 17 March 2022, when Rashkov was minister of the interior, GERB leader Boyko Borisov was detained by the police. In August 2022 the Administrative Court of Sofia City finally ruled the detention order unlawful: the detention "does not meet the standard of lawfulness and non-arbitrariness" (our translation). Rashkov told bTV he had serious objections to the court's decision. — Lex.bg, 24.08.2022, bTV, 30.08.2022
  • Marin Dimitrov ("Iarata"), 2024. In May 2024 Breaking.bg wrote, citing unnamed "people in the know", that Rashkov and Marin Dimitrov ("Iarata"), arrested on suspicion of smuggling, "have known each other for many years" (our translation); according to the outlet, the Dossier Commission named Dimitrov as an agent and as a staff officer of State Security. Rashkov says he met Dimitrov and his son Stefan when they came to his office at the Interior Ministry to testify against Boyko Borisov. — Breaking.bg, 06.05.2024

Other

  • "Former people", 2021. In May 2021, as caretaker minister of the interior, Rashkov said on Evrokom: "I hear insolent statements from former people; perhaps we should expose someone" (our translation). The UDF (a political opponent) replied that the expression "former people" was borrowed from the Bolsheviks and used by the BKP for the class enemy. — Fakti, 05.2021
