Corruption and scandals

  • Her election as president of Pernik Administrative Court is challenged by a rival. Mediapool writes that „Съдия Ахладова бе замесена в един от кадровите скандали на настоящия ВСС.“ (our translation: Judge Ahladova was involved in one of the staffing scandals of the current VSS.) On 25 October the majority in the Judges' College elected her president of the court „въпреки изричното законово изискване да бъде избран съдия Ивайло Нинов“ (our translation: despite the explicit legal requirement that judge Ivaylo Ninov be elected). Ninov entered the procedure as acting head of the court (district level), while she was president of the regional court in Pernik. According to the outlet, since August the law requires the president to be a judge of the same or a higher level, and a judge from a lower level may be chosen only by exception, if there is no such candidate. Ninov appealed the decision to the Supreme Administrative Court. Speaking to the outlet, Ahladova denied that the election was scandalous: the procedure had begun before the legal changes and had to be completed under the old rules, and her longer management experience and better concept fit within the exceptions allowed by law. The article appeared when Prime Minister Boyko Borisov appointed her deputy Minister of Justice. — Mediapool.bg
  • Denies buying a flat at preferential prices. At the briefing after she was sworn in as Minister of Justice, she commented on publications claiming she had bought a flat at preferential prices: „Не отговаря на истината това, че съм закупила апартамент на преференциални цени“ (our translation: It is not true that I bought a flat at preferential prices). According to her, only one of the contracts had been made public. The flat is in the Svoboda quarter, 82 sq. m, bought with a mortgage, and its value is „многократно над данъчната оценка“ (our translation: many times above the tax valuation). — Club Z, 03.09.2020
  • Says she does not know Delyan Peevski. At the briefing after she was sworn in as Minister of Justice, she was asked about public claims that the ministry and the judiciary had been captured by the DPS MP Delyan Peevski. She replied: „От 18 години съм в съдебната система, влияние от страна на някоя политическа група, която и да е тя, не е имало. Не познавам депутата Делян Пеевски“ (our translation: I have been in the judiciary for 18 years; there has been no influence from any political group, whichever it may be. I do not know the MP Delyan Peevski). — Club Z, 03.09.2020
