Corruption and scandals

• Бареков alleges a ministry bribe was meant for minister Илиев. After the December 2023 arrest of ministry expert Иван Иванов-младши and his father (a bribe of 62,500 BGN from the weightlifting federation president), bnews.bg, run by the politician Николай Бареков, alleges that the money was meant to go 'up the chain' to minister Димитър Илиев and that investigators therefore began a thorough examination of him as well. The text relies on witnesses and 'insiders' whom it does not name. According to the original source cited by bnews.bg (Филтър), the minister publicly announced Иванов's dismissal. The bribe case itself is documented. No charge, summons or other investigative act against Илиев has been found. Father and son were sent to court (banker.bg and 7dnibulgaria, August 2025); no verdict has been found. — BNEWS, 21 Dec 2023
• Claims about the Giro d'Italia contract and the ministry budget. As caretaker minister, Илиев complained that the Giro d'Italia contract had been signed on 16.02.2026 by the outgoing Желязков government, days before he took office, writes Искра.бг. After his term ended he said the inherited budget included 600,000 euro for a gala dinner. According to plovdiv24.bg and marica.bg, he and Иван Христанов also claim they stopped a scheme worth 1.8 million euro. These are Илиев's own claims about his predecessors, not findings by any institution. He is a political actor and backs Андрей Гюров. No finding by ДАНС, the prosecution or АДФИ on the contract has been found. — Iskra.bg, 10 May 2026
• His father – chair of БФАС when its licence was revoked. In April 2019 the ministry of youth and sports revoked the licence of the Bulgarian Automobile Sport Federation (БФАС), which was chaired by Владимир Илиев, the father of Димитър Илиев, writes Novsport. In an interview with the outlet, Калоян Станчев claims that the federation had to return money to the ministry and to the FIA for misspent funds, and that the ministry won all the court cases it brought. Станчев is a direct rival of the Илиев family in motorsport politics: he led the group that ousted Владимир Илиев and is president of the competing Автомобилна федерация на България. The interview was given when Димитър Илиев was nominated as minister. No independent confirmation (ministry order, court ruling) has been found. • After the ministry – member of an initiative committee backing Гюров. On 08.05.2026 Илиев handed the ministry to Енчо Керязов (reported by 24chasa and fakti.bg). Focus News presents him as a former minister and, reporting on a BNT interview, writes: 'He said that he is part of the initiative committee that backs the candidacy of Андрей Гюров for president and Георги Кандев for vice-president' (our translation). The statement is his own. The presidential election is set for 25.10.2026. According to clubz.bg, the committee has no party members. No state or party office held by Илиев as of October 2026 has been found. — Focus News, 21 Sep 2026
• Minister of youth and sports in the Денков cabinet and the caretaker cabinet. From June 2023 to April 2024 Илиев held the post in the regular government with prime minister Николай Денков, writes bTV Спорт. According to the outlet, he was elected by parliament with 131 votes for and 69 against, and a football scandal around the Bulgaria–Hungary match took place during his first term. The first term ended with the government's resignation (sportlive.bg, 5 March 2024). In 2026 he was minister again, this time in the caretaker cabinet; his term ended on 08.05.2026. — bTV Sport, 18 Feb 2026
• Deputy chair of the road safety agency and PP candidate. In April 2022 Илиев was appointed deputy chair of the State Agency Безопасност на движението по пътищата (road safety) by order of prime minister Кирил Петков, writes Столица.bg. In 2021 he had been PP's lead candidate in Кърджали in the parliamentary election. The appointment is confirmed by this one source only. — Stolica.bg, 21 Apr 2022
