Corruption and scandals

  • Voted showing a photo of his ID. As foreign minister he voted in the Slatina district mayoral by-election in Sofia by showing a photo of his ID card on his mobile phone instead of the document itself; under the Electoral Code voting this way is unlawful, RFE/RL writes. None of the polling-station commission members objected and he was given a ballot. The episode is visible in a video by the PIK agency, republished by PP-DB MP Ivaylo Mirchev, who wrote: "This is a matter for resignation" (our translation). The Sofia municipal election commission and the foreign ministry had not answered the outlet's questions by the time of publication. — RFE/RL Bulgarian Service, 16.06.2025

Other

  • Borisov – best man at his wedding. On his appointment as deputy foreign minister at 26, Utro Ruse wrote that he was among Boyko Borisov's favourites (our translation) and would be the youngest member of the cabinet. Later the GERB leader was best man at his wedding to the presenter Violeta Mancheva, when he chaired the party's youth organisation; according to 24 Chasa, Borisov had himself prompted the wedding. — Utro Ruse, 12.05.2017, 24 Chasa, 28.08.2022
