Corruption and scandals

• Claim that his predecessor handed him a folder of money. The head of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (БАБХ), Христо Даскалов, told NOVA that his predecessor, Prof. Пламен Моллов, handed him a folder that he said contained documents but was full of money, at least 100,000 leva. Даскалов says he threw the folder aside, left the car and informed the State Agency for National Security. He confirmed to bTV the authenticity of a leaked audio recording of the meeting of 19 January, in which his and Моллов's voices are heard and which he made out of concern; according to News.bg the word bribe is not heard on it, the talk is of documentation. Agentsia Standart reports a decision of the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office and writes: „Проверката на държавното обвинение обаче е показала, че отправените твърдения са неверни.“ (our translation: The State prosecution's check, however, showed that the claims made are untrue.) • Removed as head of БАБХ; the reason is disputed. Radio Free Europe reports that the caretaker cabinet removed Даскалов as executive director of БАБХ. Deputy Agriculture Minister Крум Неделков gave several reasons: he returned from leave before the Central Election Commission had announced the final results, which in Неделков's view breaches electoral law, then made staff reshuffles and concluded what Неделков called an improper annex to a contract whose term had expired. Speaking to Nova TV, he denied dismissing staff and said the real reason was his disclosures and actions to bring the Капитан Андреево border crossing back under state control. Until a few months earlier, phytosanitary checks there had been carried out by the private firm Евролаб 2011. — Radio Free Europe, 06.10.2022
