Corruption and scandals

• Sanctioned by the US over corruption at Kozloduy NPP. A former executive director of the plant, he was sanctioned under the Magnitsky Act on 10 February 2023. The US accuses him of coordinating, together with former energy minister Rumen Ovcharov and another former plant director, Aleksandar Nikolov, the taking of commissions by diverting the plant's contracts to their own businesses through offshore companies. It also alleges that „Николов и Генов са се съгласили да приемат подкуп от 5 млн. лв. от чуждестранни лица, свързани с ядрената енергетика“ (our translation: Nikolov and Genov agreed to accept a bribe of 5 million leva from foreign persons linked to the nuclear industry), and that he offered a businessman a contract with the plant in exchange for 3 million leva. On bTV he denied this: „Фактите не звучат конкретно“ (our translation: The facts do not sound specific). He said an investigator showed him, in 2016, an anonymous complaint about a meeting in a sauna at which he had asked for the money.
