Communist Party and State Security

  • The father as a State Security officer on the "Turkish line". A question for the MP. 168 Chasa wrote in June 2013: „Баща му Валентин Иванов, известен като Шошо, е работил в Държавна сигурност по т.нар. турско направление.“ (our translation: "His father Valentin Ivanov, known as Shosho, worked in State Security on the so-called Turkish line.") According to the same outlet he left the services of his own will and started a construction business. Epicenter (December 2021) adds that the father, as a senior lieutenant, recruited Beyzat Yahya, a former chairman of the DPS in Venets, as an agent. Decision No. 20 of 19 December 2007 of the Dossier Commission (municipal councillors, local elections 2007) names as the recruiter and handler of agent Beyzat Sadak Yahya, born in the village of Venets, senior lieutenant Valentin Ivanov Ivanov of the State Security department of the Interior Ministry's Shumen directorate, recruitment on 27 October 1986. We found no document linking that officer to the businessman Valentin Ivanov beyond Epicenter's statement. Our question to Ivan Ivanov: is senior lieutenant Valentin Ivanov Ivanov of the Shumen directorate your father? — 168 Chasa, 27 Jun 2013, Epicenter, 11 Dec 2021, Dossier Commission, Decision No. 20/2007

Corruption and scandals

  • Dismissed as deputy interior minister hours after the appointment. On 19 June 2013 he was appointed deputy interior minister in the Oresharski cabinet and dismissed the same day, after Capital, citing the DAKSI company database, wrote that since 1995 he had managed the Shumen branch of the SIK group. Tribune, republishing bTV, quotes Interior Minister Tsvetlin Yovchev: „Оповестените от медиите данни за зам.-министър Иван Иванов не позволяват оставането му на работа в МВР“ (our translation: "The data about deputy minister Ivan Ivanov made public by the media do not allow him to stay at the Interior Ministry.") According to Frognews, BSP deputy chairman Dimitar Dabov took responsibility for the nomination and spoke of kompromat. Ivanov and the BSP deny any link to SIK; Capital is an interested party in the dispute and the origin of the claim. — Tribune (bTV), 19 Jun 2013, Frognews, 21 Jun 2013
  • The Constitutional Court rejects a request to end his mandate. After the appointment 48 GERB MPs asked the Constitutional Court to establish that the post of deputy minister was incompatible with his position as a member of parliament. In Decision No. 9 of 22 October 2013 the court held that incompatibility arises only once the appointment procedure is completed, and he kept his seat. — Constitutional Court, case No. 15/2013
  • Accused by caretaker minister Shishkov over road contracts; denies it. In June 2026 caretaker Regional Development Minister Ivan Shishkov claimed that the ministry's previous leadership had prepared, through a changed indexation methodology for road contracts (Hemus, Vidin–Botevgrad, landslides), an abuse of over a billion leva. Ivanov replied on BNT: „Не виждам основание да се твърди, че има кражба.“ (our translation: "I see no grounds to claim there is theft.") In his account the methodology came from the Chamber of Builders and was adopted by the Council of Ministers, and his order of 6 February 2026 banned indexations without the minister's approval. Shishkov is his successor in the post and a political opponent. — BNT, 23 Jun 2026
