Corruption and scandals
- The dismissal of Hristo Daskalov. As deputy minister of agriculture he announced at a briefing the dismissal of the executive director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA), saying that "actions of the agency's former head were in breach of electoral legislation" (returning to work before the Central Election Commission announced the elected MPs by name), and that he had also dismissed and appointed staff and unlawfully signed an annex to an expired contract, 24 Chasa reports (our translation). According to Mediapool, the dismissal came immediately after Daskalov, back at work on 4 October, signed a claim to have the lease of the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint by the company Evrolab 2011 declared null and a notarial notice to vacate the buildings, and his orders were annulled. Later, before the agriculture committee, he claimed the dismissed director had breached the Electoral Code and that his instruction on the claim would have failed in court; committee chair Rosen Kosturkov interrupted him, saying a breach of law is established only by a court. Asked whether he had not noticed in 3.5 months that the BFSA was inactive on the case, he corrected that the period was two months and replied: "I was not informed" (our translation).
