Corruption and scandals

  • The resignation. On 9 March 2026 Neli Andreeva resigned as deputy director general of NKZhI, after caretaker transport minister Korman Ismailov replaced the head of the company on 6 March. She claimed that the corruption model continues and that, despite an order to stop all payments, a contract was signed "which wholly serves the interests of firms connected with the status quo", and accused the minister of being "part of the model he supposedly fights" (our translation). She did not specify which contract or which appointments she meant. — News.bg, 09.03.2026
  • The reply. According to Mediapool, the transport ministry stated that after her statement minister Ismailov invited her to a meeting to present her data on corruption schemes at NKZhI, and that she refused; according to the ministry she had been on sick leave since 4 March 2026. Mediapool also writes: "Unofficially, Neli Andreeva is regarded as close to the presidential administration" (our translation), and that she has the support of Hristo Aleksiev, former caretaker transport minister in Rumen Radev's governments; she has held senior posts at NKZhI since late 2019. — Mediapool, 09.03.2026
