Corruption and scandals

  • Belgian request to lift his immunity in the Huawei investigation; not granted. BNT reports that the European Parliament confirmed to it a Belgian request to lift the immunity of five MEPs, among them Nikola Minchev of Renew Europe, in connection with an investigation of a criminal group engaged in active corruption, money laundering and influence peddling for Huawei. The federal prosecutor's office has charged eight people whose names have not been disclosed; according to Belgian media, a former assistant of his is among them. He himself says the investigation concerns his former assistant and that the prosecutor has no specific charges against him, but wants to check whether anything improper happened during a visit to a football match, made on an invitation that reached him through the assistant from a Huawei representative who later turned out to be a key figure in the investigation. He states that he will request the lifting of his immunity as soon as possible. By decision P10_TA(2026)0195 of 16 June 2026 Parliament decided not to waive his immunity. Its reasons: there is "a flagrant scarcity of concrete elements in the request"; the later oral and written exchanges with the Federal Prosecutor "did not disperse the considerable uncertainty" as to the elements of the request; the information presented "did not allow Parliament to confidently arrive at a sufficiently informed decision", and that uncertainty "could, moreover, be of such a nature as to indicate the existence of fumus persecutionis". The decision also states that Parliament "cannot assume the role of a court" and that in a waiver procedure a Member "cannot be regarded as a defendant". — BNT, 20 May 2025, European Parliament, decision of 16.06.2026

  • Says he descends from an MP who signed the declaration against the deportation of Jews. BTA reports that at the commemoration in front of the Monument of Salvation in Sofia on the Day of the Rescue of the Bulgarian Jews, the Speaker of the National Assembly Nikola Minchev said he took part as Speaker, as a Bulgarian citizen and as a "descendant of one of the members of parliament who signed the declaration against the deportation of Bulgarian Jews" (our translation). — BTA, 10 Mar 2022
