Russia

  • Russia. On bTV's "Face to Face" in September 2026, Popov criticised the way Prime Minister Rumen Radev speaks about Russia: in his view, from Russia's point of view Bulgaria is part of the "collective West", which "in itself poses a new threat to Bulgaria" (our translation). — Actualno, 04.09.2026

Corruption and scandals

  • The photo. Popov, who acted as mayor of Varna while Blagomir Kotsev was in custody, was photographed with Oleg Nevzorov. He told BNT the photo was taken in Varna's central square and that Nevzorov was introduced to him as the person who printed the flyers for a Ukrainian embassy exhibition; the information that Nevzorov is a secret witness in the case against Kotsev came out a month and a half to two months later. Asked whether he would give up his immunity if the prosecution requested it, he said: "In no way do I believe I have broken the law" (our translation). — Varna24, 04.06.2026
  • The check. In July 2025 the Economic Police department of the Varna regional police directorate began a check, ordered by the Varna District Prosecutor's Office, of the administrative procedures behind the two orders in which arrested mayor Blagomir Kotsev named his temporary stand-in (first Dimitar Kirchev, then Pavel Popov). Municipal council chair Hristo Dimitrov had challenged the order before the Administrative Court, which left the complaint unexamined. Club Z writes that it is not yet clear what the matter of the orders has to do with the economic police, or what the district prosecutor's office has to do with it. — Club Z, 15.07.2025
  • Dido Dankata. Popov claims that the illegal construction at Baba Alino near Varna could not have happened without a broker, and says he suspects businessman Daniel Slavov, known as Dido Dankata, whose ties to Borisov and especially Peevski are, in his words, very well known. Popov, a former deputy mayor of Varna and an MP for Democratic Bulgaria, is a political opponent of those he names. Mediapool reports no established facts and no reply from Dankata. — Mediapool, 04.06.2026
