Corruption and scandals

  • Claim that three large producers used forged excise stamps. As chairman of the alcohol producers' association and director of Селект дистилъри, he said publicly that the three biggest firms in the sector used forged excise stamps, e-vestnik.bg writes. He said this required cover: „Трябва да има и политически чадър, спец-службите да си затварят очите“ (our translation: "There must also be a political umbrella, the special services must turn a blind eye"), and the Finance Ministry as well. He named no companies. He himself runs a smaller competitor and so had a commercial interest in the claim. No investigation of the three has been found. — e-vestnik.bg, 16.08.2007
  • Anti-mafia police raid on the Княжево plant. e-vestnik.bg writes that a few days after his press conference, anti-mafia officers of ГДБОП raided the Селект дистилъри plant in Княжево, where no forged excise stamps were found. In press releases the police tied to the firm bottles with such stamps found in another warehouse. The article presents the raid as retaliation or a set-up. It is the only source, and the outlet took his side. No charges or court ruling have been found. — e-vestnik.bg, 22.08.2007
  • Claim that politicians stopped an entry into warehouses. Mediapool.bg reports that Танов, a party to the dispute over the raid, told MPs that information about it leaked to the owner of Селект, Павлин Найденов. He allegedly phoned БСП General Secretary Димитър Дъбов and „потърси съдействието на политици и те за 10 минути му решиха въпроса“ (our translation: "sought the help of politicians and they settled the matter for him in 10 minutes"), and the order to enter the warehouses was cancelled. The claim comes from Танов alone and is unconfirmed. — Mediapool.bg
