As defence minister he urged, about the Russian aggression in Ukraine, "let us not rush to put labels on whether it is a military operation or a war" (our translation), citing Vladimir Putin, Radio Free Europe reports. Kiril Petkov stated: "No minister has the right to a foreign policy of his own, especially on Facebook" (our translation). Earlier, in a post of his own, he wrote that he expected to be dismissed but would not step down, as that could lead to a "risk to national security" (our translation). — RFE/RL Bulgarian Service, 28.02.2022
- His party as described on Wikipedia. The Bulgarian Wikipedia article on Bulgarski Vazhod, which he leads, calls it a national-conservative party but notes that "according to analysts it is a left-wing, national-patriotic and pro-Kremlin formation" (our translation). — Wikipedia, 02.02.2026
