Corruption and scandals

• European Public Prosecutor's Office indictment over EU funds for a port project. The European Public Prosecutor's Office files an indictment in court against the former Varna regional governor, former mayor Ivan Portnih and two Maritime Administration officials. According to the prosecutors, the four took part in a scheme of forging documents and giving false information in order to unlawfully obtain European funding. The project is worth EUR 3.4m and concerns the reconstruction of a fishing port at the Karantinata locality. The investigation finds that when the documents were submitted there was no port there, and that only a few pontoons were assembled for the purposes of the project. The damage to the EU budget is estimated at about EUR 2.8m. • Denies wrongdoing in the Karantinata case. He told BNT: "Няма злоупотреби с европейски средства" (our translation: there has been no misuse of European funds) and "Документите, които сме представили са достатъчно категорични, че съществува рибно разтоварище" (our translation: the documents we have submitted are conclusive enough that a fish landing station exists). As he recalls, the station was built by Chernomorski Rybolov AD, Varna branch, in the 1960s and 1970s. He says the charges rest solely on an expert witness who is also a complainant in the case. He and Portnih, the two accused, claim that the prosecutors' publication serves the interests of Portnih's opponents from PP-DB and that the complaint was filed by their activists. — BNT News, 01.12.2025
