Corruption and scandals

  • Suspended sentence over a fatal crash. Marica reports that on the Trakia motorway near Ihtiman his car swept away the car of a family from Harmanli, in which Penka Gocheva burned to death, and that he was "sentenced in 2003 to one year and 9 months suspended, with a 4-year probation period" (our translation). PIK dates the crash to 2 April 2002; the dead woman's daughter, the lawyer Gergana Georgieva, told the agency that he signed a plea agreement with the prosecution and that the probation period was three years. When the PIK reporter Sonya Koltuklieva asked him about the crash, he kept repeating that she does not check her information. — Marica, 14 August 2023, PIK, 15 September 2024
  • Dispute with the surviving victim over unpaid compensation. Marica reports that on a civil claim by the crash survivor Vladimir Gochev the court awarded 64,581.32 leva in compensation in 2011, and that on 23 March 2022 Halilov filed a claim against him to have the debt declared time-barred, "with the survivor also to bear the costs of 13,682.89 leva" (our translation); the case was opened at Sofia City Court and sent on jurisdiction to the Haskovo Regional Court. There the survivor's lawyer, Gergana Georgieva, stated: "Since then Timur Halilov has not paid a single stotinka" (our translation). She, who is also his sister, told PIK that the courts at two instances ruled for the family and that it agreed to accept only 45,000 of the 245,000 leva owed under the enforcement cases, at 800 leva a month over five years; according to the agency the agreement dates from May 2024. — Marica, 14 August 2023, PIK, 15 September 2024
  • Allegation of transferred property. Gergana Georgieva, sister and lawyer of the crash survivor Vladimir Gochev, told PIK that officially he has no property in his name and no employment contracts, and that after a garnishment notice the bank replied that there was no money in his account: "He transferred the properties to his relatives straight away" (our translation). — PIK, 15 September 2024

Other

  • Called on prosecutors to act on Tsvetan Vasilev's testimony against Peevski. He spoke at a briefing in the National Assembly by the DPS MPs not in any parliamentary group: "the KTB case is not simply a matter of draining a bank but a symbol of abuse of power" (our translation). — BTA, 16 August 2024
  • Disputed the election result of DPS – New Beginning. On BNT's Oshte ot denya, speaking for the Alliance for Rights and Freedoms – DPS, he said that "90% of the votes for DPS – New Beginning at the election were not genuine" (our translation). — BNT, 20 November 2024
