Corruption and scandals
- Finally acquitted by the Supreme Court of Cassation on an extortion charge. The Supreme Court of Cassation left in force the decision of the Burgas Appellate Court, which had upheld the Varna District Court's acquittal of Mareshki and Krasimira Koleva. The prosecution alleged that in autumn 2014 the two had extorted the businessman Asen Milanov to pay them 10,000 leva in rent for his pizzeria in Varna. Before that, the Varna Appellate Court twice sentenced him to 4 years' imprisonment and a fine of 8,000 leva, but both times the Supreme Court of Cassation quashed the appellate verdict and sent the case back for retrial. The civil claims of Milanov (40,000 leva) and of Ред хот България ООД (14,838.37 leva) remain rejected. According to the supreme judges, the indictment is marked by contradictions, inconsistencies and unclarities. The decision cannot be appealed. — Frognews, 25.03.2025
