Russia

  • Lukoil. After drone strikes on two ships in the Black Sea, he told Nova TV: "No, as regards the deliveries for Lukoil through the Black Sea there is no risk. There is no need for panic in this respect" (our translation). — Actualno.com, 08.10.2026
  • Ukrainian grain. In April 2023, as caretaker minister of agriculture, he criticised the European Commission for not acting fast enough to protect Bulgarian farmers from losses caused by duty-free imports of grain, sunflower and other products from Ukraine, and said the caretaker government was considering a ban on imports of Ukrainian grain and food. "We must protect our own economy" (our translation), Gechev said. — RFE/RL Bulgarian Service, 17.04.2023

Corruption and scandals

  • The BFSA dismissal. In October 2022 caretaker Prime Minister Galab Donev, on the recommendation of Gechev as caretaker minister of agriculture, dismissed the head of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, Hristo Daskalov, who had taken phytosanitary control at the Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint away from the private firm Evrolab 2011. The ministry gave as its reason that he had returned to work before the Central Election Commission announced the new MPs, which it called a violation of the Electoral Code. Daskalov, a Prodalzhavame promyanata (We Continue the Change) candidate, claimed to Mediapool that he had signed orders thwarting an attempt by the caretaker government to bring the private firm back to the border. — Mediapool, 05.10.2022
  • GERB in the ministry. In August 2022 he told bTV that it was strange to be accused of "returning GERB to the Ministry of Agriculture" (our translation). According to him, he replaced three people, two forest-enterprise directors and one board member, and BSP representatives were also appointed in the forest sector. The page does not name his accusers. — Actualno.com, 17.08.2022
