Russia
- The refinery. On 11.11.2025 Stankov, as energy minister, told journalists that the ministry was in constant contact with the US Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) to obtain a so-called General License allowing the refinery in Bulgaria to keep operating after the deadline (21 November), and that "his two main tasks at the moment are to secure a positive result from the talks with Washington and to guarantee stable fuel supplies and prices for Bulgarian citizens" (our translation). — News.bg, 11.11.2025
Corruption and scandals
- The plot near the NPP. According to documents reviewed by RFE/RL Bulgaria, energy minister Zhecho Stankov approved the request for the state to provide money to buy a plot near the Kozloduy NPP: about 68 decares, for nearly EUR 100 million, or about BGN 3,000 per square metre. The outlet says neighbouring plots were bought for the same purpose at a price 1,000 times lower. The plot belonged to Interprom and in November 2025 was contributed in kind to a new company, Arake 999, with the same manager, Kaloyan Teodosiev; RFE/RL sent questions to Interprom and received no answer. — RFE/RL Bulgaria, 22.12.2025
- The deal dropped. According to Mediapool, at a meeting with the GERB party activists in Veliko Tarnovo, Stankov, then the outgoing minister (in resignation), said that the Kozloduy NPP would not complete the EUR 100 million plot purchase and would instead start expropriation proceedings for 20 private plots on the site. — Mediapool, 17.01.2026
- The companies. According to a Mediapool check of the Commercial Register, before becoming a GERB municipal councillor in 2011, Stankov was manager and owner of Ecogaz Engineering (gasification and heating) and Ecotest (testing of instruments). As of January 2015 the business had been transferred to his brother Pavel Stankov. — Mediapool, 13.01.2015
Other
- His father. Club Z writes of Stankov: "Stankov was born in 1982, an economist by training, and is the son of the European wrestling champion Doncho Zhekov" (our translation). — Club Z, 24.02.2018
