Corruption and scandals

  • Trial over the 1995 grain crisis. News.bg reported that the defendants in the grain crisis case at the Sofia City Court were the former deputy prime minister and trade minister in the Videnov cabinet, agriculture minister Vasil Chichibaba, his three deputies and the Neftochim executive director Stefan Nedelchev. The six were charged with causing the crisis and harming the state through the export of 990,000 tonnes of grain in 1995. On 21 April 2009 the same court, by verdict no. 164, found Chichibaba and his deputies Manyo Manev, Dimcho Shopov and Maria Lazarova not guilty and dismissed the Ministry of Finance's civil claim against them. According to the newspaper 24 Chasa, Kiril Tsochev was acquitted as well. — News.bg, 22.12.2003, 24 Chasa, 24.01.2026
