Connection with the communist criminal organization:
- Son of Communists; father: Dimitar Yakov Stanishev - former Secretary of the Central Committee of the Bulgarian Communist Party, responsible for international relations of the Party; mother: prof. Dina Sergeyevna Muhina (Stanisheva) professor from the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University.
- On April the 3rd, 1990 The Communist Party renames itself as BSP (Bulgarian Socialist Party), and the new name of the party is registered in the Sofia City Court on April 10, 1990. Since 1995 Sergey Stanishev works in the Supreme Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party as chief Expert in "Foreign Policy and International Relations." The following year he is appointed as head of the same department. In 2000 he was appointed as member of the Supreme Council and the in the Executive Board of the Party Supreme Council as Secretary for International Affairs. On December 15, 2001 the second session of the 44th Congress of the Bulgarian Socialist Party Sergey Stanishev was elected chairman of the Supreme Council of the party.
Connections with Russia:
- He is citizen of the Soviet Union by birth and only in 1996 he forsakes the Russian citizenship acquired after the collapse of the USSR and he acquires Bulgarian citizenship.
- In 1989, he graduates from the History Faculty of Moscow State University with a thesis on "The Role of the uniform for the morale of soldiers in the Red Army." In 1994 he defends a thesis for a PhD degree on "System of advancement to senior civilian ranks in Russia and its evolution in the second half of the 19th century." In 1998, he specializes political science at the Moscow School of Political Studies.
